Empowered Action: PM Modi Expresses Deep Concern on Crimes Against Women Amid Kolkata Doctor Rape Case Outrage
In a poignant address from the historic Ramparts of the Red Fort on India’s 78th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the strides women have made in sectors such as the military and space exploration but also raised serious concerns about their safety. Acknowledging recent violent incidents against women, Modi stressed the importance of swift investigations and stringent punishments to foster societal trust and deter future crimes.
“There is public outrage over atrocities against our mothers and sisters. I feel this outrage. The country, the society, our state governments need to take this seriously,” Modi asserted, emphasizing the necessity of publicizing punishments to instill a fear of consequences. He remarked that widespread discussion on the penalties for such crimes is crucial to dissuade potential offenders.
On financial empowerment, PM Modi highlighted that 10 crore women have joined self-help groups over the past decade, gaining financial independence and becoming integral to household decision-making processes. This transition, supported by loans amounting to 9 lakh crores, is seen as a significant catalyst for social change.
Significantly, Modi’s speech extended for 98 minutes, marking his longest Independence Day address to date, surpassing his previous record of 96 minutes in 2016 and 82-minute average for such speeches.
