Global Blame Game: Why India Struggles to Address Pahalgam Terror
Senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar has raised concerns about India’s global diplomatic effectiveness following the recent Pahalgam terror attack. He stated that apart from Israel, no other country has explicitly blamed Pakistan for the incident. Aiyar criticized the ‘Operation Sindoor’ effort, in which several Indian political leaders, including Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, traveled abroad to advocate for India’s stance, suggesting that these initiatives did not yield significant results.
In an interview with IANS, Aiyar expressed that despite multiple foreign visits and public statements, India has not succeeded in persuading the international community that Pakistan was responsible for the attack. He remarked, “Shashi Tharoor and his associates can travel as extensively as they want; however, outside of Israel, no other nation has pointed their finger at Pakistan concerning the Pahalgam attack. While many condemn terrorism, none are willing to hold Pakistan accountable.”
Aiyar referenced the UN Security Council meeting held after the attack, highlighting that while the final statement condemned terrorism, it did not specifically name Pakistan. He noted, “In the UN Security Council meeting, the concluding statement denounced terrorism without indicating who was responsible-Pakistan’s name was omitted. No one has officially stated that Pakistan is culpable.”
He further added, “Only we assert that Pakistan is culpable. We have not been able to present any evidence or identify the Pakistani agency involved in the attack. The world is not accepting India’s narrative. Prime Minister Modi travels extensively, but what tangible benefits have we seen in return?”
