Former Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) MP Prajwal Revanna, the grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, has been convicted in one of several sexual abuse and rape cases against him. A Special Court in Bengaluru found Revanna guilty on Friday following accusations from a 48-year-old domestic worker, who claimed he raped her twice at his family’s farmhouse in Karnataka’s Hassan district in 2021. The victim alleged that he recorded the assaults using his mobile phone.
Judge Santosh Gajanan Bhat indicated that the sentencing for Revanna will be revealed on Saturday. In addition to this case, he faces further allegations that include rape and sexual harassment, which are currently under investigation by a special investigation team (SIT).
The situation gained significant attention after explicit videos allegedly involving Revanna were reportedly circulated in Hassan in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections. The SIT was established in May 2024 to investigate these serious claims, and Revanna was suspended from the JD-S following the public disclosure of the allegations.
Born into a prominent political family, Revanna is the grandson of HD Deve Gowda, the patriarch of the JD-S. His father, HD Revanna, previously served as a minister in the Karnataka government. The allegations against him have created a substantial political uproar in the state.
The JD-S is part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Union minister HD Kumaraswamy, who is Revanna’s uncle, is also closely associated with the party dynamics surrounding these allegations.
