Tragic Farewell: Community Unites to Honor Caste Killing Victim Kavin in Emotional Funeral Ceremony
Minister for Social Welfare P. Geetha Jeevan and Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi joined a large congregation of villagers and community members in Arumugamangalam on Friday to pay their final respects to C. Kavin Selvaganesh, a 27-year-old victim of a caste-related killing. Kavin, an engineer employed in the IT sector, was tragically killed by S. Surjith, the brother of the woman he loved, in Palayamkottai just days prior.
The funeral drew significant attention, highlighting the complicated social dynamics surrounding caste in the region. Kavin belonged to the Scheduled Caste, while his accused murderer was from the Most Backward Caste, underlining the deeply entrenched tensions within local communities. During the ceremony, prominent figures, including Ministers P. Geetha Jeevan and Anita R. Radhakrishnan, Thoothukudi District Collector K. Elambahavath, and Superintendent of Police Albert John, laid wreaths and expressed condolences to Kavin’s grieving family, particularly his mother, Tamilselvi, a devoted teacher.
Kavin’s body was initially withheld from his family as they made specific demands regarding justice. They refused to accept his remains until there was recognition of the broader systemic issues at play in this tragic incident. This standoff began soon after Kavin’s death, following his family’s insistence on the arrest of two individuals-Surjith’s parents, Saravanan and Krishnakumari, both serving as sub-inspectors-in relation to the First Information Report. Kavin’s family finally accepted his body for cremation only after significant developments occurred, including the detention of Surjith under the Goondas Act, which allowed for expedited legal measures.
The intervention of local officials played a crucial role in resolving the family’s concerns. Minister K.N. Nehru, who oversees the Tirunelveli district, along with Tirunelveli Collector R. Sukumar and Police Commissioner Santosh Hadimani, visited the mortuary to pay their respects before formally handing over Kavin’s remains to his father, C. Chandrasekar, and younger brother, Praveen, around 10:35 a.m.
With police protection, Kavin’s remains were transported back to Arumugamangalam for the last rites, which were marked by a somber atmosphere and a strong sense of community mourning. The incident has ignited discussions about caste-based violence and the urgent need for societal change within the region.
As the community grapples with the implications of this tragic event, the call for justice and accountability continues to echo, pushing for significant reforms against caste discrimination and violence in Tamil Nadu.
