Trump’s Policy Backfires: Decline in Indian Students Heading to US

There has been a staggering 70% decline in the number of Indian students heading to the United States for higher education. This drop is attributed to the blockage of visa slots and a sharp rise in visa rejections resulting from policies enacted during the Trump administration concerning international students. In New Delhi, education consultants note that this reduction is unprecedented, with many students left anxiously refreshing visa appointment portals without a clear resolution.

Sanjeev Rai from Hyderabad Overseas Consultants highlighted the situation, explaining that typically, most students would have completed their visa interviews by this time and would be finalizing their travel plans. However, this year, many remain uncertain as they struggle to secure visa appointments. This has led to frustrations among students, marking one of the most challenging years in recent memory for aspiring scholars.

While US officials maintain that visa slots will be made available gradually, significant confusion persists. Ankit Jain from Window Overseas Education Consultancy expressed concern that even students who initially booked their appointments have not received any confirmation. He pointed out that the US system appears to be opening slots only as a test, as no confirmations are coming through after bookings.

As a result of these issues, Indian students are increasingly considering alternative destinations for their studies instead of the US, signaling a potential shift in international student trends.
