US Action Against TRF: Devastating Impact for Pakistani Army and Asim Munir
New Delhi, July 18 (IANS): The United States has officially designated The Resistance Front (TRF) as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist Entity (SDGT). This decision significantly undermines the Pakistani Army and its Chief, General Asim Munir. Intelligence reports and forensic evidence suggest that TRF has been operating under direct orders from the Pakistani military establishment, specifically from General Munir.
The recent attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which coincided with increasing domestic unrest and global scrutiny of Munir’s authoritarian measures against democratic movements, served to divert attention from these internal issues. The U.S. designation not only acknowledges the legitimacy of India’s military response through Operation Sindoor but also exposes Pakistan’s military-industrial nexus converting terror tactics for political gains.
On April 22, TRF executed a brutal attack in Pahalgam, which resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals targeted solely for their religious beliefs. Defense officials assert that this was not merely an isolated incident but part of a broader strategy orchestrated by Pakistan to destabilize the region and misrepresent the situation as an indigenous uprising. TRF emerged after India’s repeal of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019.
Marketed by Pakistan’s propaganda machinery as a “homegrown” insurgent group, TRF is essentially an offshoot of the internationally banned terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). This rebranding is a common tactic employed by Pakistan to escape international scrutiny while continuing its support for cross-border terrorism under the guise of local resistance.
Defense sources indicate that despite its new identity, TRF functions under the logistical, financial, and operational umbrella of LeT, sharing identical leadership structures and military resources, primarily stationed in areas controlled by Pakistan. The name change aims to evade scrutiny from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and present terrorism as a grassroots phenomenon, rather than a foreign-engineered conspiracy.
The U.S. designation of TRF as a terrorist organization reinforces earlier insights into its direct role in the Pahalgam massacre. It connects the group with LeT and highlights General Munir’s involvement in planning the attack to distract from his faltering campaign against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and the illegal detention of its leadership. This shift in focus served to bolster his authority within the military and justify his controversial self-appointment as Field Marshal.
Experts argue that these developments not only threaten regional stability but also suggest that the Pakistan Army has transitioned from a national institution to a state-sponsored terror entity, acting autonomously and driven by personal ambition.
The illusion surrounding TRF has been shattered; it is neither an indigenous movement nor a legitimate resistance. Instead, it cloaks itself under the branding of LeT, implicating Pakistan’s military leadership in international terrorism.
India’s Operation Sindoor was not only a punitive measure but also a strategic, legitimate, and proportional response. The international community, especially democratic countries, must recognize Pakistan as a state that exports terror rather than a victim of it.
The atrocities in Pahalgam reaffirm India’s long-held belief that terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir is not homegrown but imported. TRF represents the latest iteration of LeT’s activities, with Asim Munir at the helm of this violent narrative. His manipulation of state resources for personal political gain highlights Pakistan’s alarming descent into militarized extremism.
India remains unwavering in its commitment to protecting its sovereignty and civilians, vowing to expose and dismantle all terrorist proxies through a combination of force, diplomacy, and a compelling strategic narrative.
