Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang led a significant event on July 16, distributing cheques, house repair tokens, and approval letters for protective wall construction as part of various state-run welfare schemes. The gathering took place at Samman Bhawan, attracting a diverse audience eager to receive assistance aimed at fostering self-reliance among the needy.
Representatives from mandir and gumpa committees, churches, schools, clubs, NGOs, and students from both Indian and international universities attended the event. The aid was distributed under several of the chief minister’s flagship programmes, including the Chief Minister’s Discussion Grant, Medical Assistance Scheme, Education Assistance Scheme, and Employment Assistance Scheme.
In his address, CM Tamang reaffirmed the government’s commitment to helping individuals who genuinely seek to improve their circumstances through honest work. “We will support those who work hard, but anyone who misuses these benefits or sells the assistance they receive will face consequences. Our goal is to make people self-sufficient, not dependent,” he stated.
A highlight of the event was the Employment Assistance Scheme, which offers eligible individuals up to Rs 5 lakh to launch small businesses like food stalls, tailoring shops, or poultry farms. CM Tamang emphasized that these initiatives are designed to provide dignified livelihoods.
Furthermore, since 2019, the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund has supported thousands of families whose homes were damaged by natural disasters or fires, providing financial aid for repairs and rebuilding. The government aims to construct 11,000 homes in phases under a housing initiative, prioritizing the poorest families while acknowledging the budgetary constraints that limit simultaneous construction.
Starting July 19, the distribution of tin roofing sheets will commence at each Block Administrative Centre, focusing on families most in need. While some areas have already begun the token distribution for this initiative, CM Tamang reminded attendees that this will be a gradual process, urging patience. “We are moving step by step,” he assured.
CM Tamang also warned against fraudulent practices, noting instances where couples applied separately for the same benefits. “Such unfair practices will not be tolerated. Only one individual per family will be eligible, and we will publicly name dishonest applicants if necessary,” he declared.
To ensure transparency, financial assistance will be strictly issued via cheques, with no cash distributions allowed. “Everything is being documented for accountability,” the chief minister emphasized.
Reflecting on past governance, CM Tamang pointed out that structured support for the poor and working class was previously nonexistent. “Now we have clear guidelines and systems in place. Those who deserve assistance will receive it without favoritism,” he affirmed.
He expressed gratitude to community leaders, religious institutions, and local clubs for their involvement in ensuring that assistance reaches the right individuals. He called for collective efforts to maintain fairness and success in these initiatives.
