"Heartbroken Parents of RG Kar Victim Demand Justice: Seek Court Access to Crime Scene"
Parents of a doctor who was tragically raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last year petitioned a city court on July 7, 2025, requesting permission to revisit the crime scene. The case is set to be heard by the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate of the Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court.
The incident occurred on August 9, 2024, when a post-graduate trainee doctor was discovered dead in a seminar hall within the chest medicine department on the fourth floor of the hospital’s emergency building. The victim’s father expressed dissatisfaction with the ongoing investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and emphasized the need for their legal counsel to access the seminar hall. “We do not think that the CBI is carrying out a proper investigation to nab all culprits. A revisit will help our lawyers as we prepare for future court proceedings,” he stated.
Justice Tirthankar Ghosh of the Calcutta High Court had advised the family to approach the Sealdah court regarding their request. Complicating matters, last year, former principal of the medical college, Sandip Ghosh, faced accusations of tampering with the crime scene after an official letter, dated August 10, surfaced. The letter called for “urgent” renovations across every department in the hospital, leading to public concern.
Additionally, scrutiny of the police investigation intensified after a video circulated online showing a crowd at the crime scene shortly after the body was found. While the police stated that a 40-foot area around the victim had been cordoned off, the victim’s parents contested these assertions, highlighting their concerns over the integrity of the investigation.
In January 2025, civic volunteer Sanjay Roy was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the horrific crime. Despite this, the victim’s family has continuously called for a more thorough investigation, voicing their frustrations regarding the CBI’s progress in the case.
On the one-year anniversary of the tragic incident, the victim’s parents announced plans to participate in the ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’ protest scheduled for August 9, 2025. This rally aims to hold the State government accountable, with Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari pledging to join the protest without party insignia, emphasizing the importance of the movement.
Furthermore, activists are rallying to reinstate the ‘Reclaim The Night’ protests on August 14, marking one year since the initiative began. These protests advocate for women’s safety in public spaces after dark, a cause both the victim’s family and various women’s rights organizations have passionately supported. “We will definitely attend the Reclaim The Night protest organized on August 14, as we did last year,” the bereaved father reaffirmed.
The events surrounding this case continue to resonate deeply in the community, highlighting the ongoing struggle for justice and the paramount importance of ensuring safety for women in public spaces. As the anniversary draws near, calls for continued protests and advocacy reflect the unresolved wounds of this tragic incident.
