Guwahati Ferry Services Suspend Night Operations for Safety Concerns
Ferry services in Guwahati have halted all nighttime operations due to hazardous river conditions that present significant risks to passenger safety. The Inland Water Transport Division (IWT) reported that the combination of floating wooden logs and strong river currents has created dangerously challenging navigation conditions. As a result, authorities have set the final departure from Guwahati at 6:00 PM on June 27.
This decision impacts thousands of daily commuters who depend on ferry services to traverse the Brahmaputra River, especially those traveling to destinations along the river’s north bank. Ferry operators have emphasized that this suspension is a priority for public safety and protecting property over maintaining service continuity.
Recent monsoon activity has intensified the river currents and introduced debris, such as logs, floating downstream, rendering evening and night navigation perilous for ferry vessels. These conditions heighten the risks of collisions and hinder ferry operators’ ability to ensure safe passage.
The Executive Engineer of the IWT Division in Guwahati stated that normal ferry operations will resume once the river conditions improve and navigation hazards are resolved. Passengers who planned to travel in the evening are advised to seek alternative arrangements or adjust their schedules to accommodate earlier departures.
