The journey from Visakhapatnam into Odisha’s Koraput district offers a striking transformation from coastal scenery to lush hills, punctuated by roadside tea stalls and expansive fields. After about four hours of travel, I cross the Andhra-Odisha border into the Rayagada region, approaching Similiguda. Here, navigation becomes a familiar art-driven by iconic landmarks and local guidance rather than digital maps.
Koraput’s landscape is a vibrant tapestry of altitude and ecology, characterized by hilly terrain and dense forests, making it an area where natural beauty intertwines with cultural richness. The indigenous tribes, including the Paraja, Gadaba, Bonda, and Kondh, have inhabited these lands for centuries, their deep-rooted presence adding to the area’s cultural fabric.
I am en route to discover Deomali and Talamali-two peaks that until recently were primarily cherished by seasoned adventurers. However, their status has surged in popularity, thanks in part to renowned director SS Rajamouli, who chose these scenic heights as key filming locations for his much-anticipated project SSMB29. While film crews have started to explore the area, the untouched beauty of the terrain remains largely preserved, offering a serene getaway.
Deomali, standing at 1,672 meters, is a mere two-hour drive from Similiguda. Although parts of the road are indifferent at best, the vistas that unfold at the summit are awe-inspiring. From here, the hills form gentle waves that stretch into the horizon without competing for attention. On my visit, a soft mist drapes the valleys below, and the air carries a crispness infused with earthy scents. Tourism here remains modest, reflected in the few promotional signs that hint at Deomali’s allure without any intrusive commercial development. Local authorities state that the SSMB29 filming largely occurred around Talamali, a lesser-known, nearly uncharted peak that has begun capturing the interest of travelers.
With fresh air invigorating my senses, I set my sights on Talamali, just under an hour away. Unlike its more popularly advertised sibling, Talamali is often referred to as the “Table-Top Mountain,” thanks to its unique, flat summit. The journey is guided mainly by locals who know the paths well, devoid of tourist infrastructure or marked trails. Accompanied by a young guide from the Gadaba tribe, I navigate the final stretch at a leisurely pace.
Upon reaching Talamali, panoramic views unfold from the broad summit, which offers an unmatched perspective of the surrounding hills. The route is well-kept, and the landscape showcases an array of green hues against the backdrop of a seemingly infinite sky, particularly enchanting during the monsoons.
As I take in the natural beauty, the approach to Talamali offers its own revelations, with local people gracefully moving about their daily tasks. Yet, signs of increasing foot traffic are evident, as social media begins to spotlight Talamali, drawing both adventurers and casual sightseers. Unfortunately, litter spotted along the paths underscores the need for sustainable tourism practices to protect this fragile environment.
Accommodation options remain sparse near Deomali and Talamali, the sole eco-stay facility at Deomali being limited in size and amenities. Many travelers opt to stay in nearby Rayagada, which is approximately 100 kilometers away, where the Anija Golf Resort presents a reliable option for lodging. This resort not only offers day tours to both peaks but also provides guests with a taste of local cuisine, filling the gap for those looking to explore this breathtaking region.
The emerging interest in Deomali and Talamali validates the balance of preservation and tourism in this culturally rich area. However, as exploration increases, so does the imperative for responsible travel practices to safeguard the region’s integrity for generations to come.
