Hezbollah Retaliates Against Israeli Strikes with Rocket Barrages
Beirut, August 12 (IANS): Hezbollah launched a series of Katyusha rocket attacks on Monday targeting a military base in northern Israel, following Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanese villages the day before. The Hezbollah-affiliated media claimed that the rockets hit the Israel Defense Forces’ (IDF) newly established headquarters of the 146th Division in Gaaton, northern Israel, according to Xinhua news agency.
The IDF confirmed that Hezbollah fired approximately 30 rockets from Lebanon into the Western Galilee region, with many landing in open areas near Kibbutz Kabri. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from these attacks.
Lebanese military sources, opting for anonymity, disclosed that an Israeli airstrike late Sunday on the village of Maaroub in southern Lebanon injured 12 civilians and destroyed several homes. The Lebanese Ministry of Health’s Public Health Emergency Operations Center confirmed the injuries, noting that the casualties included 11 Syrians and one Lebanese, with a woman and a 5-month-old girl reported in critical condition.
Tensions have remained high in Lebanon since the July 30 Israeli attack on Beirut’s southern suburbs, which resulted in the death of senior Hezbollah military commander Fouad Shokor and seven others. Hezbollah’s Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah has vowed a ‘decisive’ and ‘painful’ response to what he described as aggressive Israeli actions.
The escalation marks another chapter in the ongoing conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, contributing to the region’s mounting instability. Both sides continue to engage in retaliatory measures, keeping the situation fraught with volatility and precariousness.
