Exciting News: Mini Buses from Private Operators Now Transforming Travel on 11 Routes in Chennai’s Outskirts!
The Tamil Nadu government has soft-launched a new last-mile connectivity initiative in Chennai, introducing mini bus services operated by private companies across 11 routes in the city’s extended areas. This development, announced by officials from the Chennai Collectorate, aims to enhance public transportation accessibility in neighborhoods such as Tiruvottiyur, Manali, and Sholinganallur.
The initiative follows a call for applications in February for 72 identified routes in these areas, where public transport has largely been underserved. With the first phase now operational, permits have been granted for 11 routes-nine in south Chennai and two in the northern region. A senior official from the State Transport and Road Safety department confirmed that operators have commenced services, which have met with a moderately positive response from the local community.
The active mini bus routes include connections between significant points such as Adambakkam Railway Station and Eechangadu junction, and from Kovilambakkam to Kamakshi Hospital junction. Notably, routes also connect vital areas like the DLF Ramapuram to Porur toll gate and the Ambattur Dunlop Bus Stand to Pammathukulam Bus Stand.
This initiative stems from a Government Order issued by the Home department as part of the New Comprehensive Scheme 2024, allowing small buses to operate statewide. In Chennai, the Bus Route Road officials conducted feasibility studies to identify these routes based on local demand, a shift from the previous system where private operators submitted applications for permits.
As part of this project, the Chennai Collectorate identified 39 routes in south Chennai and 33 in the north that were integrated into the Corporation’s transportation framework. The initiative has been well-received, especially in light of diminishing Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) services due to ongoing metro rail construction.
Local residents have welcomed the new services. S. Praveenkumar, a resident of Keelkattalai, highlighted the benefits of the mini bus service from Adambakkam to Eechangadu, noting its timely introduction amidst reduced MTC services. Others, including A. Sivakumar from Sholinganallur, emphasized the substantial gap in last-mile connectivity based on a recent study from the Federation of OMR Residents Association (FOMRRA).
While private mini buses have launched their routes, the MTC is also working on its own initiatives. A new mini bus service from Velachery to Thoraipakkam is in the pipeline, promising to connect neighborhoods like Kallukuttai with essential public transportation. Recently, the MTC established a mini bus route to assist Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) users, further demonstrating its commitment to improving commuter options in the city.
As these improvements take shape, the expansion of mini bus services remains crucial for enhancing connectivity in Chennai, particularly in areas previously lacking adequate public transport access. The ongoing efforts reflect a broader commitment to adaptive urban transportation solutions, addressing the needs of a growing population.
