Neeraj Chopra Triumphs in Ostrava with Stunning 85.29m Throw!
Ostrava (Czech Republic), June 24 (IANS) — Two-time Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra dominated the javelin throw event at the Ostrava Golden Spike 2025 meet, securing victory with a best throw of 85.29 meters on Tuesday. His performance solidified his status as a leading athlete this season, as he clinched the title with one throw remaining, remaining unbeaten after six rounds. This win marks his second title in just a month, following his triumph at the Paris Diamond League meet a few days ago.
The 27-year-old from Haryana delivered his most impressive throw on his third attempt. Meanwhile, Douw Smit of South Africa and Anderson Peters of Grenada finished in second and third places, recording throws of 84.12 meters and 83.63 meters, respectively.
Chopra made history for India by winning the gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and followed that achievement with a silver medal in Paris 2024. Having recently excelled in the Paris Diamond League, he aimed to extend his winning streak in Ostrava.
Despite his victory, Chopra expressed some disappointment with Tuesday’s distance, as he had recently surpassed the 90-meter mark and was hoping to replicate that feat. His day started with a foul on his first attempt, followed by a throw of 83.45 meters in his second. However, he made a substantial comeback, recording his best throw of 85.29 meters in his third attempt.
Chopra maintained his lead, with Smit and Peters close behind. He was unable to improve his distance in his final three throws, registering 82.17 meters in the fourth attempt and 81.01 meters in the fifth. His sixth throw was also a foul, as he could not execute it effectively to gain a better distance. Nevertheless, Chopra’s win in Ostrava adds to his impressive achievements this season, continuing his legacy in the sport.
