Commuters and local residents express growing frustration over the significant delays in the ₹300-crore redevelopment of Ernakulam Junction railway station (ERS). Initially slated for completion by the end of July, the project has only seen just over 20% of its work finalized since its inception in late 2023. This slow progress has led to severe inconveniences for travelers facing issues such as space constraints, waterlogged pathways, and uneven surfaces within the station area.
Regular rail commuter Ramesh Mathew highlights a pressing concern: “The stretch from the station’s entry gate to the temporary entrance frequently gets waterlogged even with moderate rain, forcing commuters to wade through dirty water.” Efforts to address these issues have so far fallen on deaf ears. Passenger associations submitted requests earlier this year urging authorities to minimize the barricaded areas to allow for a smoother flow of vehicles picking up and dropping off commuters.
Improving the infrastructure is a critical focus, with calls to raise the carriageway, eliminate surface undulations, and construct a temporary canopy. “Commuters need safe access on rainy days,” Mathew noted, emphasizing the necessity for anti-skid tiles on platforms, especially at redeveloped stations in Kerala, to prevent slips and falls.
Local organizations, including the Ernakulam Vikasana Samity, have been vocal about the need for remedies to address ongoing issues caused by vendors encroaching on the station’s access roads. Such encroachments further complicate safe movement for pedestrians and vehicles, as shared by auto driver Siju: “It’s challenging to identify passengers amid the chaos in the cramped space outside the barricades.” These conditions create a particularly troublesome environment for auto and cab drivers who frequently navigate the congested area.
Recent inspections by Hibi Eden, MP, and T J Vinod, MLA, aimed to address the ongoing difficulties experienced by commuters at this crucial railway hub, which remains one of the top revenue earners for the Indian Railways. They urged that steps be taken to expedite the re-tendering process for the remaining 80% of the redevelopment work.
In response to the growing dissatisfaction, Railway officials have acknowledged the necessity for improved infrastructure to ensure secure and fluid movements for both vehicles and pedestrians. Plans are already in motion to re-tender the remaining redevelopment tasks shortly, aiming to alleviate the commuter frustrations highlighted in numerous community discussions.
As locals and commuters await significant improvements, the call for timely action is crucial to restoring the station’s reputation and efficiency. While the hurdles of waterlogging and space constraints persist, the hope for a revitalized ERS continues to resonate among those who rely on this important transit hub daily.
