UN Chief Calls for Urgent De-escalation After US-Iran Strikes
United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres urged immediate action to de-escalate the escalating crisis in Iran during an emergency special session of the Security Council held at UN Headquarters in New York. This call for peace comes in the wake of recent US military strikes on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear facilities. Guterres emphasized the necessity of avoiding retaliation and preventing a deeper conflict, stating, “We cannot-and must not-give up on peace.” He characterized the US attack as a “perilous turn” in a deteriorating regional situation, condemning the military escalation and underscoring the dire consequences of potential retaliatory cycles. He highlighted the urgency of protecting civilians and ensuring safe maritime navigation, advocating for a “credible, comprehensive, and verifiable solution” to the Iran nuclear program, which includes granting full access to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors.
The emergency Security Council meeting, convened by Russia, China, and Pakistan, aimed to propose a resolution that demands an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran’s representative to the Council, reaffirmed Tehran’s right to defend itself against what he described as blatant US aggression, stating that the timing and scale of any response will be determined by Iran’s armed forces.
In stark contrast, Israel’s UN envoy, Danny Danon, defended the US strikes, arguing that they have made the world a safer place and dismissed calls for condemnation. China’s ambassador, Fu Cong, condemned the US military actions and called for restraint, while Russia’s ambassador, Vasily Nebenzya, remarked that the United States has opened a “Pandora’s box,” indicating a lack of interest in diplomacy.
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Dorothy Shea, warned against any escalation from Iran, asserting that any attack-whether direct or indirect-against Americans or American bases would trigger devastating retaliation. This ongoing crisis raises significant concerns about international peace and security, underlining the urgent need for diplomatic engagement and conflict resolution in the region.
