A district-level team, under the directives of the Hon’ble High Court of Sikkim, conducted its bi-monthly inspection of dams managed by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) in Gyalshing District on June 19, 2025. The inspection was led by Mr. Suresh Rai, the Additional District Collector (ADC) of Gyalshing, along with key officials including SDM Mr. Sandesh Subba, SDPO Mr. Bimal Gurung, Additional Chief Engineer Ms. KSC Tongden Lepcha, DPO (Disaster Management) Mr. Ganesh Kumar Rai, and NHPC General Manager Mr. SK Mishra, among others.
The primary goal of this inspection was to evaluate the safety protocols and warning systems in place at the hydro power project sites. The team conducted a comprehensive review of warning signage, communication systems, and other essential safety installations. Special focus was given to alert systems designed to notify the public of potential hazards. This included examining power and communication lines, audible warning devices and beacons, illuminated signage, and public announcement systems intended to inform people of sudden changes in water flow in the tailwater areas of the powerhouse.
Additionally, the team assessed various physical safety measures, such as restraining devices, fencing, and barriers, to ensure their effectiveness. NHPC officials were also directed to make necessary repairs to the Reshi Highway Tunnel and its surrounding safety walls.
The inspection wrapped up with several actionable recommendations aimed at enhancing public safety around the hydro power facilities. These proposed measures are expected to significantly bolster the safety infrastructure in the inspected areas. The findings highlight the ongoing commitment to ensuring that safety remains a top priority at these critical facilities.
