UK Water Companies Ordered to Dramatically Double Compensation for Outages – Unprecedented Move!
In response to frequent water outages and a recent parasite incident, the UK government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has proposed doubling the compensation that water companies in England and Wales must pay customers for poor service. Under the new plan, households would receive £50 for water outages, with an additional £50 for every subsequent 12-hour period the water remains off. Compensation for internal sewage flooding could reach up to £2,000.
These measures, which include payments for customers forced to boil water and fees for unresolved complaints, have entered an eight-week consultation period. The current compensation framework has not been updated since 2000. The water sector is already under scrutiny for illegal sewage discharges and persistent leaks, resulting from long-term under-investment in infrastructure.
In May, about 16,000 homes and businesses in Devon had to boil their water because of a parasite contamination in South West Water Ltd.’s service area. The same month, over 32,000 properties on the South East coast experienced water cuts due to a burst pipe managed by Southern Water. Additionally, Thames Water customers in Surrey were advised against drinking tap water after gasoline infiltrated the supply.
Steve Reed, Secretary of State at Defra, criticized the industry, stating, “Our water industry is broken. After years of failure, households and businesses have been let down by water companies time and time again.”
To address these issues, the industry is seeking regulatory approval to increase customer bills by over 35% in the next five years to support a £100 billion investment in infrastructure and climate change mitigation. The regulator, Ofwat, is expected to deliver a decision in December but has indicated plans to constrain these proposals.
According to the Consumer Council for Water, minimum reimbursements under Defra’s plan would be £40, roughly 10% of the current average annual customer bill.
