Group of Seven (G7) leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, gathered Sunday in the Canadian Rockies for a summit that has taken on heightened urgency following Israel’s recent military actions against Iran. The three-day meeting in Kananaskis marks Trump’s return to global diplomacy, with a more assertive approach evident in his second term.

Despite past disparagement of Canada-calling it better suited as the 51st U.S. state-Trump is engaging with his northern neighbor under the leadership of Prime Minister Mark Carney. Carney, who succeeded Justin Trudeau in March, aims to foster a more unifying atmosphere among the G7 nations: the U.S., Canada, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Japan. However, discussions are expected to reveal divisions, particularly around Israel’s recent attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities, escalating tensions in the region.

Israel initiated this military campaign, which began on Friday, while Iran retaliated with missile and drone strikes. Notably, Trump has publicly praised Israel’s actions but also urged both parties to seek a diplomatic resolution, seeking to navigate a precarious balance as U.S.-Iran talks regarding Iran’s nuclear program are ongoing. French President Emmanuel Macron has called for restraint and for Iran to return to negotiations, while Japan deviated from its Western allies by condemning Israel’s strikes as “completely unacceptable.”

Tensions surrounding another conflict will also feature prominently at the summit. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is an invited guest, keen to address Trump about the ongoing war in Ukraine, particularly after Trump’s controversial remarks during their last meeting in February. Frustrated by Putin’s resistance to U.S.-led calls for a temporary truce, Trump discussed both the Israel-Iran situation and Ukraine with the Russian president over the phone on Saturday.

The summit is unlikely to produce a joint G7 statement addressing these contentious issues. Instead, Carney plans to focus on less controversial subjects such as enhancing supply chains. In his previous G7 appearance in Canada in 2018, Trump left the summit prematurely, tweeting criticisms of Trudeau and distancing the U.S. from the final communiqué.

While G7 leaders are eager to engage with Trump, boundaries are also clear. Macron recently denounced Trump’s rhetoric surrounding Greenland, emphasizing the importance of allyship: “That’s not what allies do.” Trump arrives at the summit after attending a military parade in Washington, coinciding with his birthday and accompanied by nationwide protests against his increasingly authoritarian measures.

On the trade front, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen spoke with Trump, advocating for increased pressure on Russia given its invasion of Ukraine and expressing hopes for progress in trade negotiations. Trump, advocating for a transformative approach to global trade, has signaled intentions to impose tariffs on both allies and adversaries by July 9, a deadline he previously postponed. Experts suggest allies should tread carefully, understanding the risks associated with direct confrontation.

Also attending the Kananaskis summit is Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The relationship between Canada and India has recently faced strains, with accusations surrounding the assassination of a Sikh separatist in Canada leading to diplomatic fallout.

As global leaders gather in the dramatic backdrop of the Canadian Rockies, the summit promises to challenge long-standing diplomatic norms while navigating a complex landscape of international relations.
