Urgent: Mumbai Faces ‘Yellow’ Alert as Heavy Rains Pour Down; IMD Issues Critical ‘Orange’ Alert for Affected Districts!

Heavy rains swept through parts of Mumbai overnight, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a ‘yellow’ alert for the city on Sunday. The weather agency forecasts heavy showers in isolated locations, with neighboring districts such as Thane, Raigad, and Palghar receiving an ‘orange’ alert due to expectations of heavy to very heavy rainfall.

During the overnight downpour, Mumbai experienced substantial rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning. By morning, the intensity of the rain decreased to light showers, and civic officials reported minimal waterlogging across the city. Over a 24-hour period ending at 8 a.m. on Sunday, the island city recorded 31 mm of rainfall, while the eastern and western suburbs received 21 mm and 20 mm, respectively.

In addition to the rain, officials also issued a high tide warning, forecasting a surge of 4.27 meters at 2:52 p.m. on Sunday. A low tide of 1.91 meters is expected later at 8:55 p.m. On Monday, another high tide of 3.55 meters is anticipated at 2:37 a.m., with a low tide of 1.06 meters at 8:20 a.m.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the Konkan coast between June 14 and June 18, 2025, due to forecasted squally weather with wind speeds ranging from 40 to 50 km/h, potentially gusting up to 60 km/h. The IMD has also warned to avoid the Goa coast during this period.

Beyond Mumbai, the IMD has issued a red alert for June 15, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Goa, Kerala, and the coastal regions of Maharashtra and Karnataka. In its latest bulletin, the IMD indicated the likelihood of extremely heavy rain-exceeding 20 cm within 24 hours-at isolated locations across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, as well as in Coastal Karnataka on June 15, and South Interior Karnataka on June 14. Heavy rainfall is expected to continue until June 16 in Kerala and Mahe.

As the region braces for heavy showers, residents are advised to stay vigilant, particularly in areas prone to waterlogging and flooding. With weather conditions fluctuating, ensuring safety during this period is paramount.
