Over 200 People on Board Flight: Urgent Update on Casualties Expected
Air India flight AI171 crashed in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on Thursday, June 12. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner reportedly had over 200 passengers on board at the time of the incident. The aircraft went down in the Meghani area, a densely populated neighborhood near the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
The flight was scheduled to depart for Gatwick, London, at 1:10 PM IST. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far. In an official statement posted on social media platform X, Air India confirmed that “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details.”
Fire and rescue teams have been dispatched to the crash site, and the area has been cordoned off as authorities work to control the fire and carry out search-and-rescue operations. As of now, there is no further information regarding casualties.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has left Surat for Ahmedabad to assess the situation firsthand. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also reached out to Patel, offering all possible assistance from the central government.
An investigation is anticipated to be initiated by India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) to determine the cause of the crash.
