A wave of intense heat from North Africa is set to sweep across parts of Europe this week, triggering powerful thunderstorms and transporting Saharan dust into the atmosphere. Temperature trends have shown a stark divide; western Europe has reported above-normal conditions while the eastern regions remain cooler. For instance, the Copernicus report revealed that May 2025 was 0.29°C below the long-term average for Europe. In contrast, global average temperatures for May were 0.59°C above normal, marking the second-highest figure ever recorded and 1.4°C higher than pre-industrial averages.
