Unlock the Magic: Discover the Heartfelt Stories of Connemara Public Library in Chennai

On a breezy Friday evening, the Connemara Public Library in Egmore buzzes with activity as students of all backgrounds and ages flow in and out. Located on the Government Museum campus, this iconic library boasts an impressive collection of over 980,000 books, proving to be far from a forgotten relic in Chennai. The library’s rich history dates back to March 22, 1890, when the then-Governor of the Madras Presidency, Lord Connemara, laid its cornerstone. Officially opened to the public in 1896, it has since become a cherished landmark, frequented by notable figures including C.N. Annadurai and writer Sujatha.

Today, the library is especially popular among civil service aspirants, witnessing a surge in daily visitors. According to a senior librarian, “At least 600-700 students use the library every day, a significant portion being civil service aspirants.” While about 10% of these students bring their own study materials, space can be limited, highlighting the library’s growing role as a vital educational hub. Older patrons can still be found perusing newspapers and magazines, but it’s the younger crowd that dominates the scene, utilizing the library’s resources for academic success.

Ilamathi T., a dedicated UPSC aspirant from Salem, describes the Connemara Library as her “second home.” After a long day of studying, she remarked, “I also sit under the campus trees to study; it is peaceful, but at the same time, I am never alone, as many students are preparing for exams alongside me.” She particularly appreciates the archives of old newspapers and the extensive collection of competitive exam material available.

While the main sections of the library buzz with daily activity, its hidden gem is the heritage wing, which opens to the public only once a year, on April 18. During this rare occasion, readers can explore ancient texts from the 18th and 19th centuries, including “The Revolt in Hindustan” by Sir Evelyn Wood and the 1822 publication “Centamil.” Meanwhile, the library’s textbook section, general books, reference materials, Indian language books, and periodicals continue to see robust usage.

In an effort to enhance engagement, the library management is introducing various initiatives such as book exhibitions, student programs, and cultural events to promote literary interest, especially in fiction, which has recently dropped in popularity. Furthermore, renovations are underway, including the creation of a conference room and a STEM zone, aimed at modernizing the facility.

Connemara Library also holds a unique distinction as one of only four libraries in India listed under the Delivery of Books Act. This prestigious status ensures that any book published in India-regardless of genre or size-can be found within its walls. Membership is reasonably priced at ₹300 for deposit registration and ₹50 for annual circulation, allowing members to borrow up to six books at a time. For avid readers, this has undoubtedly become an attractive offer.

As the Connemara Public Library continues to serve as a beacon of knowledge and community, it remains an essential resource for Chennai’s students and book lovers alike, embodying a rich legacy while actively shaping the city’s future in education.
