Transform Tripura’s Agro-Economy: Unleash Prosperity with a Revolutionary Oil Palm Processing Mill!
The Oil Palm Plantation (OPP) sector in Tripura is poised for major growth with the establishment of a new Oil Palm Processing Mill in the Dhalai district. Integral to this expansion is the creation of a Research & Development (R&D) center and a comprehensive support hub named Samadhan for local oil palm farmers.
Godrej Agrovet Limited is spearheading this project, aiming to enhance its existing nursery capacities from 300,000 seedlings annually to 500,000. The forthcoming R&D center will prioritize the development of high-yield, sustainable oil palm seeds tailored to the region’s specific climatic conditions.
The project was officially inaugurated by Ratan Lal Nath, Tripura’s Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, who endorsed the initiative as part of the National Mission on Edible Oil – Oil Palm (NMEO-OP). Nath underscored the mill’s role in empowering farmers to process and sell their oil palm produce locally, thereby creating a supportive ecosystem for the state’s industry.
Notable attendee Dr. Harikrishna Kulaveerasingam, Head of R&D at SD Guthrie Plantations in Malaysia, will lend his two decades of expertise in oil palm genome research to the venture, focusing on the development of regionally adapted, high-yield varieties.
Balram Singh Yadav, Managing Director of Godrej Agrovet, expressed his appreciation for the Tripura government’s support, emphasizing the project’s potential to generate employment and bolster the local economy. Sougata Niyogi, CEO of the Oil Palm Plantation Business, reiterated the company’s commitment to sustainable growth, highlighting the R&D center’s role in innovating and adapting cultivation techniques to local conditions.
Looking forward, the company aims to expand oil palm cultivation in Tripura to 10,000 hectares by 2027. Each Samadhan center will contribute to the planting of around 2,000 hectares, offering farmers access to advanced agricultural practices and expert assistance.
This ambitious project promises to invigorate Tripura’s agricultural sector, fostering economic development and sustainable farming practices.
