Violence Erupts in Delhi Court Lockup: One Inmate Dead After Brawl
A violent brawl erupted among prisoners in the Saket court lockup in Delhi on June 5, resulting in the death of one inmate, identified as Aman. He was housed in Tihar Jail number 8 alongside two individuals who are now suspected of having killed him. The incident took place as the three inmates were brought to court for their proceedings, according to the Delhi police.
In a statement regarding the incident, the police clarified that “an incident of assault took place on 5th June in Kharja No 5 of Saket court lockup.” They noted that during the time of the altercation, there were “a lot of undertrial prisoners (UTPs)” inside the lockup, which may have contributed to the chaos.
Officials have indicated that tensions between Aman and one of the accused, Jitender, had been escalating since last year. A prior altercation had occurred when Aman allegedly attacked Jitender and his brother outside the jail, leading to lingering animosity between the two.
“Two UTPs, Jitender and Jaidev, assaulted the victim,” the statement detailed. It added that Jitender and Aman had a history of conflict stemming from an incident in 2024, when Aman reportedly used a knife in the assault on Jitender and his brother.
The Delhi police have launched an investigation into the incident, with interrogations of the two inmates already underway. Preliminary reports suggest that Aman may have been strangled during the violent exchange in the lockup.
