IndiGo has significantly expanded its fleet, confirming an order for 30 additional Airbus A350 wide-body aircraft, effectively doubling its previous order and bringing its total to 60 firm orders, with an option for 40 more. CEO Pieter Elbers announced this development during the IATA AGM, stating that deliveries of these new aircraft will commence in 2027. The initial 30 A350s ordered last year are also slated for delivery starting in 2027, with the subsequent batch following later into the decade.
This strategic investment comes as IndiGo concludes its existing agreement to operate long-haul routes with wet-leased Boeing 777s from Turkish Airlines, a contract ending in three months. As part of its flight expansion, IndiGo will begin operations with B787s leased from Norse Atlantic to serve destinations including Manchester and Amsterdam.
To enhance connectivity from these new European destinations, IndiGo is forming partnerships with Delta Air Lines, Air France-KLM, and Virgin Atlantic. This collaboration aims to integrate flights between India, Europe, and North America, leveraging the strengths of each airline to offer passengers broader access to various routes. Elbers emphasized IndiGo’s ambition to become a global player by 2030, highlighting this partnership as vital for operational synergies and innovation.
Delta CEO Ed Bastian echoed this sentiment, describing the agreement as a commitment to greater connectivity and inclusivity in travel. He looks forward to Delta resuming direct services from the U.S. to India soon. Air France-KLM’s CEO, Benjamin Smith, expressed his enthusiasm for extending their partnership with IndiGo, viewing India as a crucial market with a long history of connection. Virgin Atlantic’s CEO, Shai Weiss, noted that in their 25th anniversary of flying to India, they are excited to deepen their collaboration with IndiGo, enhancing travel experiences and connectivity among the world’s largest economies.
