Chief Minister of Karnataka, Shri Siddaramaiah, on Tuesday unveiled “Leading with Compassion,” a biography of Dr. H. Sudarshan Ballal, renowned nephrologist and chairman of Manipal Hospitals. Authored by Stephen David, this biography provides a deep dive into Dr. Ballal’s five-decade career, framing leadership through his personal experiences. More than just a life story, the book serves as a vital guide for aspiring medical professionals and leaders worldwide.
The narrative explores Dr. Ballal’s formative years and key professional milestones, shedding light on the decisions and challenges that shaped his influential career in medicine. It aims to equip readers with insights essential for navigating the complexities of the healthcare landscape, both in India and globally. The foreword is contributed by M.N. Venkatachaliah, the Padma Vibhushan awardee and former Chief Justice of India, adding gravitas to the work.
Dr. Ballal is notable for being among the first in the U.S. to obtain triple board certification in Internal Medicine, Nephrology, and Critical Care. His return to India in the early 1990s marked a transformative era for Indian healthcare; he played a critical role in establishing Manipal Hospitals’ pioneering nephrology program. Under his leadership, Karnataka witnessed its first cadaver kidney transplant and the rollout of the state’s inaugural DNB nephrology program.
At the unveiling, Dr. Ballal emphasized that leadership in medicine transcends titles and technology. “It is about touching lives with empathy, staying true to your values, and leading by example. I have always believed that compassion is as essential as competence. If this book can inspire even a few young doctors to serve with heart and purpose, then it will have served its goal,” he stated.
The book launch attracted numerous dignitaries, including former Supreme Court Judge and former Lokayukta of Karnataka N. Santosh Hegde, Karnataka’s Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, and Ranjan R. Pai, Chairman of Manipal Education and Medical Group. Other notable attendees included Padma Shri awardee C. N. Manjunath, cardiologist and member of parliament for Bengaluru Rural H. S. Ballal, Pro Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, and Dilip Jose, Managing Director and CEO of Manipal Health Enterprises. Actress Sapthami Gowda was also present, adding a touch of glamour to the event.
