Unverified footage from Rafah, home to the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation that operates with Israeli military support, captured chaotic scenes as crowds rushed in multiple directions, with some carrying away boxes of essential supplies. The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) reported at least 47 individuals were injured on Tuesday while attempting to collect aid. Ajith Sunghay, head of OHCHR in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, noted that these figures could rise as more information becomes available. Speaking to reporters in Geneva, Sunghay revealed, “From January to March 2024, our office documented 26 instances in which the Israel Defense Forces fired upon individuals gathering humanitarian aid, leading to casualties at both the Al Kuwaiti and Al Naburasi roundabouts.”
Simultaneously, UN aid teams are urgently appealing for access to Gaza to distribute thousands of tonnes of food, medicine, and other critical supplies awaiting delivery just outside the region. Jens Laerke from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) emphasized that their teams possess the necessary resources to facilitate this aid flow. “Nearly 180,000 pallets of food and life-saving supplies are ready to enter Gaza, which remains one of the hungriest places on earth,” he stated. Laerke confirmed that these essential items are fully paid for, customs-approved, and poised for immediate distribution.
In a harrowing development, UNICEF reported that the ongoing conflict in Gaza has killed or injured over 50,000 children in less than 600 days. According to UNICEF spokesperson Tess Ingram, since the ceasefire ended on March 18, approximately 1,300 children have been killed and 3,700 injured. Ingram poignantly noted, “That’s enough children to fill more than 1,600 classrooms,” adding, “Every one of these children is a life, a child with a family and dreams for the future. Yet we continue to count their deaths and broadcast their suffering. This must end immediately.”
Ingram underscored the urgent need for protection for Gaza’s children from ongoing bombings, as well as access to essential resources like food, water, and medical supplies. “The blockade must end, and aid must flow freely and at scale. Most importantly, we need a ceasefire and collective action to halt these atrocities and safeguard children,” she remarked. These calls for urgent humanitarian intervention were reiterated following a tragic attack last weekend that reportedly claimed the lives of nine out of ten siblings from the Al-Najar family, all aged 12 or younger.
As the crisis continues to escalate, the situation remains dire, underscoring the pressing need for international action and support to alleviate the suffering in Gaza, especially for its vulnerable children who remain caught in the crossfire of conflict.
