International travelers arriving at Chennai Airport will soon have access to free Wi-Fi, a development set to launch at the end of June. This initiative, highly anticipated by visitors who rely on internet connectivity to book transportation and make urgent calls upon arrival, aims to significantly enhance the travel experience at one of India’s busiest airports.
Officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) have confirmed that the contract for this initiative has been awarded to Arche Global in collaboration with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). In the coming weeks, kiosks will be installed in both the departure and arrival areas of the T2 International Terminal. Passengers will be able to access free internet by scanning their boarding pass and passport at these kiosks, which will issue a coupon containing a One Time Password (OTP) necessary to connect to Wi-Fi.
Currently, international travelers with non-Indian SIM cards face challenges in accessing free internet due to the lack of a means to obtain the OTP without KYC verification. To address this issue, the initial setup will feature two kiosks in each of the departure and arrival halls, allowing passengers to utilize 500 MB of data for a duration of 45 minutes. AAI officials have indicated that the number of kiosks could be increased based on demand.
Passenger feedback has highlighted the consistent need for this service, particularly on social media platforms where frustrations regarding internet access have frequently surfaced. Frequent flyer Sathish G welcomed the announcement, emphasizing that many travelers, including tourists, will benefit from the availability of free Wi-Fi. He pointed out, however, that long wait times at the kiosks could further stress travelers who are already weary from long flights, immigration checks, and baggage claims. Sathish suggested that increasing the number of kiosks to about five or six in both halls could help streamline the process.
Once operational, AAI should ensure that clear signage is displayed throughout the terminal to guide passengers toward these newly established Wi-Fi kiosks. This will help maximize awareness and utility of the service, making the transition smoother for incoming travelers.
