Mizoram: India’s Trailblazer for Complete Literacy Achievement!
Aizawl: Mizoram has been officially declared India’s first fully literate state as of Tuesday. Chief Minister Lalduhoma made this announcement during a celebratory event at Mizoram University, attended by Union Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary. “This is a proud moment for all Mizos. As we mark this milestone, we must also renew our commitment to advancing digital literacy, financial awareness, and entrepreneurial skills across the state,” the chief minister stated. His comments were shared via a post from the Chief Minister’s Office on X.
Union Minister Chaudhary praised the achievement, highlighting the community’s sustained effort and visionary leadership. He remarked, “Mizoram has become the first fully literate state under the transformative ULLAS – Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram. Congratulations to the people of Mizoram and Hon’ble CM @PuLalduhoma.” He also recognized State Education Minister Dr. Vanlalthlana’s role and acknowledged previous governments for their groundwork in achieving this success.
“May the Northeast continue to lead the way in building a Shikshit, Kushal, and Atmanirbhar Bharat,” added Chaudhary. According to the 2011 Census, Mizoram had a literacy rate of 91.33%, placing it third nationally. Building on this solid foundation, the state initiated a comprehensive literacy drive under the ULLAS initiative and the Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram.
Through focused surveys and data analysis, officials identified 3,026 non-literate individuals, with 1,692 categorized as potential learners. The literacy campaign garnered support from 292 volunteers, including students, teachers, and community resource coordinators, who led efforts throughout the state. Officials attribute this accomplishment to an inclusive, community-driven approach and a strong culture of volunteerism.
“This success is the result of relentless dedication, grassroots mobilization, and a collective belief in the transformative power of education,” a senior education official remarked. Mizoram’s literacy campaign is now seen as a potential model for other states aiming for 100% literacy under the National Education Policy.
