Weather Fury Unleashed: Devastating Rains in Bengaluru and Guwahati Floods Disrupt Lives; Hoarding Collapse Shocks Pune Residents
Heavy rainfall continued to pummel Bengaluru on Tuesday, significantly disrupting daily life across the city. Residents navigated knee-deep water in numerous neighborhoods, while severe waterlogging led to widespread traffic jams. Tragically, the rain-related death toll in Karnataka has now reached five.
In areas like Sai Layout, conditions were particularly dire, with many ground floors half-submerged, leaving the neighborhood resembling an island. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar assured the public that officials are actively addressing the repercussions of the downpour and emphasized there is no cause for alarm. “Our commitment is to protect the lives and properties of citizens,” he stated, highlighting the government’s dedication to managing the crisis effectively.
On Monday alone, around 150 individuals were rescued and relocated to safer areas, as authorities worked to mitigate the impacts of the relentless rainfall. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has taken steps to support affected residents, providing food and water assistance in the submerged Sai Layout.
Commuters faced significant challenges with knee-deep water reported near Manyata Tech Park, an area known for its high concentration of multinational companies, and at Silk Board Junction. The heavy downpour rendered many vehicles immobile, further exacerbating traffic woes across the city. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru experienced approximately 30 mm of rain in just the last 24 hours.
Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar noted that Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah plans to visit some of the most rain-affected regions on Wednesday. “I understood the gravity of the situation firsthand by visiting several hard-hit locations last night. Our duty is to restore Bengaluru’s honor, and we are committed to doing just that,” he remarked.
In Assam, heavy rains also wreaked havoc, particularly in Guwahati, where torrential downpours flooded roads and residential areas. Many citizens were observed wading through knee-deep water, while in certain localities, water levels reached up to the chest. Significant inundation was reported in neighborhoods including Zoo Road, Nabin Nagar, and Ganeshguri. In response to the dangerous conditions, numerous schools announced closures due to flooded campuses.
Rainwater infiltrated countless homes, and power outages were reported across the city, disrupting normal activities. The IMD forecasted continued inclement weather across Assam for the coming days, predicting further heavy rainfall. On May 20, 2025, rainfall data indicated that areas around Guwahati had already received substantial precipitation, with over 112 mm recorded at the Guwahati AWS station.
In Pune, Maharashtra, the impacts of heavy rain were also felt as strong winds caused a hoarding to collapse on Tuesday, trapping several two-wheelers beneath it. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in this incident, which took place in the busy Sanaswadi area near Wagholi on Ahilyanagar Road. Footage shared on social media captured the enormous hoarding strewn across the ground next to local shops, underscoring the potential dangers posed by the severe weather conditions.
As both Bengaluru and Guwahati grapple with the aftereffects of relentless rainfall, local governments continue to respond to the urgent needs of their citizens, focusing on safety, recovery, and restoration.
