Govt Aims for 5-Year Self-Sufficiency in Fish, Meat, Milk, and Eggs
Agartala, 17th May 2025: Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha announced today the government’s ambitious target of achieving self-sufficiency in the production of fish, meat, milk, and eggs within the next five years. He emphasized the importance of animal resources alongside agriculture and horticulture during an event attended by Union Animal Husbandry and Dairy Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, which marked the inauguration of Dairy Unit-2 in Bamutia. This new facility has the capacity to process and produce 40,000 liters of milk and dairy products.
Dr. Saha highlighted the teamwork that has gone into launching this project, stating, “Today is a happy day for Tripura as another dairy farm has been added… Without teamwork, it is not possible to implement such a project and achieve the main goal.” He expressed gratitude to Union Minister Singh for his ongoing support and noted the coordination between the Animal Resources Development Department and the Cooperative Department aimed at doubling farmers’ incomes.
The dairy project, which cost Rs. 22 crore, received substantial funding—Rs. 19.41 crore from the central government and Rs. 2.60 crore from the state government. Dr. Saha stated that this unit will benefit residents of West District, Khowai District, Sepahijala District, Gomati District, and South District by offering a variety of high-quality dairy products such as milk, curd, paneer, lassi, and ice cream. He emphasized the necessity of improving socio-economic conditions in rural areas through the cooperative sector and animal resources development.
Additionally, the Chief Minister called for enhancing the supply infrastructure from producers to consumers to maintain quality standards throughout the production and supply chain. He underscored the need for training in skill development for workers, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for skill enhancement. Dr. Saha also stressed the importance of village-based milk collection and urged that animal husbandry should be encouraged, as increased sales would lead to greater financial benefits for producers.
In terms of local statistics, Dr. Saha pointed out that Tripura ranks first in the Northeast for per capita availability of eggs and second for milk. Egg production reached Rs. 33.85 crore in the financial year 2022-23, increasing to Rs. 35.96 crore in 2023-24. In meat production, figures rose from 57.34 metric tons in 2022-23 to 59.70 metric tons in 2023-24. Moreover, milk production grew from 230.12 metric tons in 2022-23 to 247.31 metric tons in 2023-24.
