Assam Congress Strongly Responds to Himanta’s Controversial Remarks on Patriotism
In a vigorous response, the Assam Congress has accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of engaging in “selective outrage, political hypocrisy, and deliberate misinformation” following his recent public criticism of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi. The Congress party defended Gogoi’s foreign travel, asserting it was undertaken “for personal religious reasons, fully disclosed and in accordance with the law.” They condemned Sarma’s effort to target Gogoi’s wife with “vague accusations without context or proof,” labeling it “defamatory and a dangerous attempt to malign individuals for petty political gains.”
The Congress statement directly challenged the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over perceived double standards concerning national security. It questioned Sarma’s silence on various issues, asking why he has not addressed the situation regarding Cabinet colleagues who have children with foreign citizenship, top BJP leaders connected to foreign entities like George Soros, and business dealings with Chinese firms, despite his strong anti-China rhetoric.
The statement also cited Ajit Doval, India’s National Security Advisor, highlighting his son’s business ties involving Pakistan and questioning why Sarma has never commented on it. The Congress party accused the Chief Minister of weaponizing patriotism for political gain, urging him to “stop misusing national security as a political stick. You are not the gatekeeper of patriotism.”
Furthermore, the party reiterated its support for Rahul Gandhi, noting that “Rahul Gandhi doesn’t take instructions from propaganda peddlers. He represents the idea of a united and fearless India.”
The heated exchange is emblematic of the escalating political tensions in Assam, as both parties intensify their rhetoric ahead of significant political events.
