In another alarming daytime incident, a brazen robbery occurred today near the SBI Main Branch in Kokrajhar, where thieves shattered a car window and stole Rs 2 lakh from a parked vehicle. The victim, Barenda Basumatary, a businessman from Gwjwnpuri village, had left his Bolero parked momentarily while he went to photocopy documents, leaving a bag containing cash inside. Taking advantage of the brief absence, the unknown perpetrator broke the window and fled with the money.
A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed at the Kokrajhar Police Station, prompting an investigation into the theft. This incident highlights a troubling trend of increasing daylight robberies in Kokrajhar. Earlier, on June 26, 2024, two men on a motorcycle snatched a bag containing Rs 34 lakh from a victim near Axis Bank on JD Road. Just twelve days after that, on July 9, a forest department official lost Rs 2.15 lakh near UCO Bank, distracted by decoy currency notes thrown behind his vehicle.
The latest robbery has raised significant concerns among the public regarding safety and has sparked serious questions about the effectiveness of local security and surveillance measures. In response, authorities have promised enhanced patrolling and a swift investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
