Pastor Acquitted in Assam: Concerns Over Legal Misuse Emerge
GUWAHATI: A local court in Golaghat has dismissed all charges against Christian pastor Pranjal Bhuyan, who was arrested under the newly enacted Assam Magical Healing (Prevention of Evil Practices) Act, 2024. The court determined that the allegations against him were completely unfounded, providing relief to the pastor.
The case was brought against Bhuyan after local residents claimed he utilized “magical healing” through Christian prayer to induce religious conversions. However, the Golaghat District and Sessions Court found no substance in these allegations and consequently dismissed the case.
The Assam Christian Forum (ACF) hailed this judgment as a significant victory and expressed gratitude to the judiciary for upholding constitutional rights. While celebrating the decision, the ACF also highlighted potential broader implications, cautioning that misuse of such laws could harm individuals and jeopardize communal harmony and public trust.
The ACF urged the government to implement safeguards against the wrongful targeting of individuals based on their faith. “The enforcement of the Assam Magical Healing Act must be fair and non-discriminatory,” stated ACF spokesperson Allen Brooks.
Reiterating their commitment to religious freedom, interfaith dialogue, and constitutional values of justice, equality, and dignity, the Forum emphasized the necessity for checks and balances to prevent legal abuse and protect citizens from unfounded accusations.
The court’s ruling has brought considerable relief to Bhuyan, his family, and the Golaghat Baptist Church. The ACF expressed appreciation for the legal team, the church, and the wider Christian community for their solidarity and support for Bhuyan.
