Emotional scenes unfolded across India on Sunday as families and communities held last rites for those who lost their lives in recent shelling incidents during the ongoing military conflict with Pakistan. The Jammu division, which faced intense firing and shelling, recorded the highest number of casualties, including several civilians. One of the fallen, Rifleman Sunil Kumar, 25, a member of the 4 J-K Light Infantry regiment, was honored with a heartfelt farewell in his village of Triva, located in the Arnia sector. Kumar was critically injured during cross-border shelling along the International Border in the RS Pura sector early on Saturday and later succumbed to his injuries. Coming from a military family with both elder brothers serving in the armed forces and a father as a former serviceman, Kumar was inspired to join the army from a young age. “The entire village is in mourning, as we lost a son of the soil who grew up in this border community and sacrificed his life in service of the nation,” former sarpanch Balbir Kour told PTI.

In a separate incident, Sub-Inspector Mohammed Imteyaz of the Border Security Force (BSF) also lost his life due to cross-border shelling. During a wreath-laying ceremony for Imteyaz on Sunday, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, and Minister Satish Sharma, along with senior BSF and police officials, paid tributes to him. Imteyaz, originally from Bihar, was killed when a mortar shell exploded near his post along the International Border, resulting in injuries to seven of his colleagues.

The Jammu and Kashmir government also extended heartfelt tributes to Raj Kumar Thapa, the Additional District Development Commissioner in Rajouri, who was killed when a mortar shell landed on his residential compound. These tragic events highlight the ongoing tensions and the human cost of the military conflict in the region.
