Unleashing the Magic: How More AI Will Transform the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 from ‘Meh’ to ‘Heck Yes!’

Rumors are swirling about the impending launch of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, anticipated to arrive in July, shortly after the Galaxy S25 Edge’s likely debut at a Galaxy Unpacked event on May 12. As with many flagship devices in recent years, changes to the next generation of Samsung’s foldable phone appear to be incremental. Expect improvements in specifications, enhancements to the main camera, potentially longer battery life, and subtle design tweaks. While this set of upgrades is promising, it’s a classic case of evolution over revolution.

This approach isn’t necessarily a disappointment. Having used multiple generations of Galaxy Fold devices, I currently rely on the Galaxy Z Fold 4 as my secondary phone. Despite my primary ownership of an iPhone 16 Pro Max—often praised for its reliability and prowess—I find unique value in the Galaxy foldable experience. However, the forthcoming Fold may not ignite the same fervor, even though it will likely secure a prominent position on the best foldable phones list.

One area that could elevate the Z Fold 7 is the integration of artificial intelligence (AI). As technology evolves, AI has the potential to enhance user experience, making smartphones more intuitive and efficient. My own journey with generative AI, spanning platforms like Galaxy AI, ChatGPT, and Google Gemini, has been sporadic but enlightening. While AI offers conveniences, its integration in smartphones, aside from the Google Pixel 9 series, has not yet reached its full potential. Samsung’s Galaxy AI, as noted in Senior Editor Philip Berne’s recent review of the Galaxy S25 Ultra, has improved markedly over the past year. However, it still indicates a need for better integration within the overall smartphone experience.

My hope is that Samsung seizes the opportunity to refine AI capabilities with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7. One major pain point for foldable users is achieving a seamless multitasking experience with multiple apps and windows on the expansive display. An enhanced Galaxy AI could intelligently optimize window sizes and layouts, streamlining the multitasking process.

Additionally, an AI-driven approach to video upscaling or resizing could enhance content consumption on devices with unique aspect ratios, ensuring that users can fully enjoy videos without croppings or distortions. Instead of merely focusing on how AI can refine photographs or organize media libraries, the emphasis should shift to practical applications that maximize the benefits of foldable technology, allowing users to navigate and operate their devices swiftly and effectively.

Ultimately, AI’s evolution should aim to enhance user interaction, particularly within the foldable phone sector, which presents compelling opportunities for innovation. As we anticipate the Galaxy Z Fold 7, the hope is that Samsung recognizes the potential AI holds to enrich the user experience and provide substantial enhancements to this emerging category of smartphones.
