Pakistan Reaffirms Commitment to Kashmir Ceasefire Amid India’s Violations Accusations

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has stated that the Indian armed forces are actively responding to reported ceasefire violations by Pakistan. This announcement came just hours after a ceasefire deal was established on Saturday night. Misri declared, “Pakistan has violated the ceasefire agreed today,” and urged Pakistan to cease such actions. He noted that Indian forces have been directed to take strong action against any infractions along the border, as residents in Jammu and Srinagar reported hearing explosions and seeing projectiles in the night sky.

In response, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif affirmed his country’s commitment to the truce, emphasizing Pakistan’s desire for peace. He stated, “We are a very responsible country… We have made this agreement of ceasefire and we have been very positive about it.” Meanwhile, Pakistani officials have denied any wrongdoing, with Information Minister Attaullah Tarar labeling Indian media reports of violations as baseless, insisting that it is a time of celebration for Pakistan.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed support for both India and Pakistan’s efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution. He conveyed concerns over escalating conflict during discussions with Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and urged both nations to remain calm and restrained. Wang reinforced China’s willingness to play a constructive role in the dialogue process.

Despite the ceasefire announcement, areas in Jammu experienced drone attacks shortly thereafter, heightening tensions. Leaders from both nations have been vocal about their positions: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called for a lasting ceasefire, while India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reiterated India’s firm stance against terrorism. The global community has reacted with caution; UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric welcomed the ceasefire yet emphasized the importance of a long-term resolution.

The aftermath of the ceasefire remains complex, as neither side has fully acknowledged the violations reported by the other. Pakistani officials are focusing on the narrative that attributes violence to ongoing conflicts in Kashmir, especially in light of a troubling history marked by decades of hostilities. Both sides face the challenge of rebuilding trust amid lingering grievances.

Residents in both India and Pakistan reacted with mixed emotions to the ceasefire news, some celebrating the hope for peace while others remained skeptical given the history of prior agreements. The situation remains fluid, with military officials on both sides monitoring developments closely. As the world watches, the ceasefire marks both a significant step towards potential peace and a reminder of the intricate and deeply rooted discord between these nuclear-armed neighbors.
