Experience the Thrill: Skywalk Over Greenways Road Set to Open This June!

The 160-metre long skywalk linking the two sections of the Tholkappia Poonga in Adayar is set to open in June, according to the Greater Chennai Corporation’s (GCC) Bridges Department. This cable-stayed pedestrian bridge spans Greenways Road and aims to enhance visitor experience within the ecopark.

Commissioned by the Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust (CRRT), construction began in July 2024, with an estimated budget of ₹7.16 crore. Designed to provide a safe passage between Phases 1 and 2 of the park, the skywalk will allow visitors to enjoy uninterrupted views and improved safety as they engage in activities like jogging and birdwatching. An official from GCC stated, “Once open, the skywalk will offer an elevated perspective between the park’s two sections, enhancing safety for morning joggers, birdwatchers, and visitors.”

The skywalk features a 27-metre main span over the road, supported by ramps measuring 68 metres and 65 metres on either side. This cable-stayed bridge, akin to notable structures like the Signature Bridge in Delhi and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in Mumbai, supports its deck and walkways using steel cables anchored to tall pylons. “The structure was chosen for its aesthetics, with a walkway width of 3.2 metres to accommodate foot traffic, joggers, and small groups,” the official explained. The deck will rise 5.8 metres above the road, ensuring unobstructed traffic flow below.

According to a document from the GCC, a single 25-metre tall tower will provide support through the use of steel cables. The primary structure consists of a reinforced concrete deck, topped with wood-plastic flooring and flanked by stainless-steel handrails. The substructure is being secured by 44 deep foundations (piles), each measuring 450 millimetres in diameter, interconnected by pile caps, tie beams, and pedestals.

Construction progress has reached 65%, with 62% of the budget already allocated. Tasks such as fitting the handrails and completing the flooring are scheduled for completion by late May. “All essential components, including piles, pile caps, tie beams, and pedestals, were finished by early May. Work on the support tower and cable stays is ongoing,” the GCC document indicated.

Challenges have emerged around the area, particularly concerning stray cattle and littering. A member of the Poonga View Resident Welfare Association noted that the GCC initially rejected a walkway proposal due to a nearby cattle shed, which has since been repurposed for residential use. Unfortunately, issues persist with stray cattle roaming the vicinity and rampant littering outside the park. “The Town Planning Scheme Road faces ongoing problems with open dumping, defecation, and late-night liquor consumption. Despite multiple complaints to regional officials, no action has been taken,” the resident expressed.

As the opening date for the skywalk approaches, both excitement and concerns continue to grow among residents and potential visitors. The bridge promises to be a significant addition to the Tholkappia Poonga, offering not only scenic views but also a safe haven for the community.
