Thousands Seek to Join Chandigarh’s Civil Defense: Serve Your Community with Honor!
Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan, particularly following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, the Chandigarh Administration has extended an invitation to young citizens aged 18 and above to join as Civil Defence Volunteers. This initiative aims to bolster emergency preparedness in the region. In response to these tensions, which have escalated due to drone and missile threats from Islamabad targeting Chandigarh and other Indian states, India’s Integrated Counter-UAS Grid and Air Defence systems have successfully neutralized these threats.
The Deputy Commissioner of UT Chandigarh made an impassioned appeal to the youth through a post on X, emphasizing the importance of serving the nation and being prepared for emergencies. The post read, "APPEAL TO THE YOUTH Serve the Nation. Be Prepared. Chandigarh Administration invites young citizens who are above 18 years of age to join as Civil Defence Volunteers and support emergency preparedness."
On May 10, 2025, thousands flocked to the Tagore Theatre in Chandigarh eager to register as Civil Defence volunteers, demonstrating a strong commitment to fostering a culture of readiness and resilience within their community. A video shared by news agency ANI on X showcased the impressive turnout, as large lines formed outside the venue in response to the call for volunteers to aid in emergency assistance.
The turnout at the registration event reflects a growing civic responsibility among the youth of Chandigarh in light of the precarious geopolitical situation. As tensions with Pakistan continue to pose threats, initiatives like the Civil Defence Volunteer program resonate deeply, enabling citizens to play a vital role in safeguarding their communities.
