In a compelling demonstration of solidarity and public demand for peace, a large “United Peace Rally” took place in Longding district, Arunachal Pradesh, on Friday. Organized by the Wancho Council, the rally drew hundreds from diverse age groups and genders, all rallying for an immediate cessation of abductions, extortion, and violence perpetuated by insurgent factions.

Numerous community-based organizations from the Wancho community, such as the Wancho Wangham Council, Longding District Students Union, Gaon Burahs, and Zilla Parishad Chairpersons participated in the event, representing regions including Longding, Kanubari, Pongchau, Tissa, and Wakka. Protesters moved through the main thoroughfares of Longding town, brandishing banners and placards with urgent messages like “Stop Insurgency,” “No More Bloodshed,” and “Peace for Longding.”

The rally concluded at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, where community representatives convened with DC Bekir Nyorak, submitting a memorandum that called for decisive government action against insurgent activities. Participants vocally condemned the entrenched climate of fear that has plagued civilians for years. An elder poignantly stated, “We are trapped between insurgents and security forces. Our people are the scapegoats.”

Despite the imposition of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), Longding has seen over 90 reported abductions attributed to militant groups since 2018, raising significant concerns about the effectiveness of current security measures. This rally stands as one of the most significant civil society movements against insurgency in the district in recent times, highlighting a growing public exasperation and an urgent call for peace and normalization.
