In the occupied West Bank, the devastation of war is starkly evident, resembling the destruction seen in Gaza. Homes lie in ruins, walls are riddled with bullet holes, and roads have been torn apart by bulldozers. However, this destruction is not a result of conflict in Gaza, where the war between Israel and Hamas has left tens of thousands dead and ignited a severe humanitarian crisis. The reality unfolded during a recent visit by New York Times reporters to Jenin, once a densely populated area that has experienced an unprecedented military crackdown on militancy since January.
The Israeli military’s operations have led to widespread displacement, forcibly clearing neighborhoods and leaving areas like Jenin almost entirely abandoned. In one particularly affected locale, a community that once housed over 10,000 people now stands deserted, its access blocked by mounds of dirt and debris. The Israeli military’s plan to demolish homes in nearby Tulkarm aims to facilitate access for their forces while preventing the resurgence of militants. “They’re taking away my future,” lamented Muath Amarne, a 23-year-old university student whose home is set for destruction.
Previously, Israeli military operations were brief, often lasting mere hours or days. However, since the start of this year, forces have maintained an extended presence in the heart of West Bank cities, primarily targeting Hamas and the Islamic Jihad movement. Clashes have dwindled in recent weeks, indicating that many militants have been arrested or killed, both by Israeli military action and in cooperation with the Palestinian Authority, a governing body that has long been expected to lead toward statehood.
The extended military presence in Jenin and Tulkarm is undermining the Palestinian Authority’s authority and stability. “Israel is acting as if the Palestinian Authority doesn’t exist,” stated Mohammed Jarrar, Jenin’s mayor, during a March interview. This assertion of control began shortly after a ceasefire in Gaza was established. Israel aimed to deliver a decisive blow to West Bank militants, launching operations that have so far resulted in over 100 militant fatalities and the displacement of approximately 40,000 Palestinians.
As anxiety grows among residents, some fear a second “nakba,” or catastrophe, reminiscent of the mass displacement that occurred during the 1948 founding of Israel. “I’m afraid I won’t be able to go home like in 1948,” expressed Saleema al-Saadi, an 83-year-old Jenin resident who experienced displacement decades ago.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz indicated in late February that military operations in Jenin and Tulkarm could extend for a year, marking a significant shift in governance in the West Bank since the establishment of the Palestinian Authority in the 1990s, when Israel ceded most local governance. Reports from Jenin highlight plans that could reshape the camp itself into a conventional neighborhood, which many view as an attempt to erase the history and plight of Palestinian refugees.
Palestinians have been subjected to intimidation tactics during this military escalation. Kifah Sahweil, a 52-year-old resident, recounted how an Israeli drone instructed her to evacuate her home or face destruction. Amid the chaos, displaced families find themselves living in cramped conditions, grappling with uncertainty and loss.
Mohammed Abu Wasfeh, a resident, voiced the emotional turmoil of displacement, saying, “We’re living in the unknown. We’ve lost control of everything.” As the situation evolves, the ramifications of this military campaign in the West Bank continue to affect the lives of countless Palestinians, deepening the humanitarian crisis in the region.
