Empowering Women: Kakching District’s Initiative for Menstrual Hygiene under ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’
In a critical advancement for menstrual hygiene and the empowerment of female students, the District Administration of Kakching in Manipur has installed a sanitary napkin vending machine and an incinerator at Kakching Higher Secondary School, free of charge. This initiative aligns with the Government of India’s Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme, which aims to safeguard and educate girls.
The introduction of these machines is designed to enhance the accessibility of sanitary products for female students and promote better menstrual hygiene practices. Officials highlighted that menstrual hygiene management (MHM) is a crucial focus of the BBBP scheme, operational since 2015 to address gender disparities and improve welfare services for girls.
The distribution initiative was executed by the District Administration of Kakching in partnership with the District Protection Officer (DPO), the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Cell, and the Zonal Education Officer (ZEO) of Kakching.
To further raise awareness, students and teachers received notebooks and posters containing essential information about the Women Helpline (toll-free number 181) and the Child Helpline (toll-free number 1098). Officials clarified that these helplines offer immediate support to women and children facing distress situations.
A similar awareness initiative was also conducted at Wabagai Higher Secondary School, where students were provided with educational materials detailing the availability of helpline services.
