New Delhi, May 8 (IANS): The Indian Army has firmly condemned the recent killing of innocent civilians in Poonch district, Jammu and Kashmir, pledging decisive and punitive measures in response to such attacks. This declaration followed the tragic incident where 13 individuals, including a soldier, lost their lives, and 59 others were injured due to heavy mortar shelling conducted by the Pakistan Army along the Line of Control (LoC).
In an official statement, the army expressed solidarity with the civilian victims of the indiscriminate artillery attacks from across the border, asserting, “The nefarious designs of our enemies have been and will continue to be thwarted with resolute and punitive action.” This escalation of hostilities comes closely on the heels of the Indian Armed Forces successfully executing ‘Operation Sindoor,’ a significant counter-terrorism operation targeting nine high-value objectives in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The incident has heightened tensions in the already volatile region, particularly as Pakistan’s non-compliance with the ceasefire agreement has persisted for 14 consecutive days.
Amidst this unprovoked aggression, 32-year-old Lance Naik Dinesh Kumar from Palwal district in Haryana became a martyr during his frontline duty, succumbing to injuries received from the intense cross-border shelling. The Indian Army recognized his supreme sacrifice, with General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of Army Staff, saluting Kumar’s bravery in defending India’s sovereignty at the border until the end.
The Ministry of Defence reported that during the night of May 7-8, 2025, Pakistan Army posts engaged in unprovoked firing, utilizing small arms and artillery targeting regions opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, and Akhnoor in J&K. The Indian Army responded in a measured manner to these provocations.
The ongoing hostilities, particularly the focused attacks on civilian areas, have intensified urgent calls for a robust and sustained response to Pakistan’s repeated violations of the ceasefire pact.
