Tripura’s Transport Revolution: ₹150 Crore Projects Set to Transform State Infrastructure!
Tripura’s Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury announced on Saturday that the state is actively implementing projects valued at ₹150 crore aimed at enhancing the transportation infrastructure. During a review meeting at the State Sonartari Guest House, Chowdhury emphasized the importance of executing these initiatives with a focus on quality and punctuality.
The meeting featured an in-depth discussion about the ‘Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment’ program for the 2024-25 fiscal year. Projects outlined under this initiative include the construction of motor stands, district transport buildings, and regional driving test centres, as well as the establishment of an inter-state bus terminal. There are also plans to celebrate Road Safety Week, promote the ‘Good Samaritan’ initiative, and create a Commissionerate building.
Chowdhury stressed the need for effective coordination among various departments connected to the Transport Department. “Officials have been instructed to ensure the quality execution of projects within stipulated timelines to prevent negligence,” he said. He noted the ongoing commitment to public awareness, particularly regarding Road Safety Week, which is observed annually. “This effort should be expanded to grassroots levels, involving schools and colleges for greater impact,” he added.
The minister addressed the central government’s ‘Good Samaritan’ initiative, which previously rewarded citizens who helped accident victims with ₹5,000. “The scheme has been rebranded as the ‘Rah Veer’ initiative, with the incentive increased to ₹25,000. However, awareness about this program is still lacking in Tripura. It’s crucial for District Transport Officers and the police to collaborate on spreading the word,” he stated.
Chowdhury reflected on the recent transition to a cashless system within the department, noting that the revenue collected in the last financial year stood at ₹155 crore. “This shift towards cashless transactions has enhanced transparency and increased revenue,” he reported.
Regarding the implementation of the e-challan system, he mentioned a collaborative effort between the State Bank of India, the Traffic Department, the National Informatics Centre (NIC), and the Transport Department. “We are developing a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that aims to bolster transparency and operational efficiency,” Chowdhury explained.
The review meeting was attended by several senior officials, including Transport Department Secretary C.K. Jamatia, Commissioner Subrata Chowdhury, and Tourism Department Director Prashant Badal Negi, among others. This gathering exemplified the shared commitment to improving Tripura’s transportation landscape, paving the way for a more efficient and safer travel experience for all residents.
By focusing on strategic initiatives and fostering inter-departmental collaboration, the Transport Department aims to enhance public services, ensuring that all projects not only meet but exceed the expectations of the citizens of Tripura.
