Manipur Stands Strong: Heightened Security Prepares for Emotional Anniversary of Ethnic Strife
As the second anniversary of the ethnic strife in Manipur approaches on May 3, 2023, security measures have been significantly heightened throughout the state. Authorities have intensified frisking and vehicle checks at critical locations in Imphal, Churachandpur, and Kangpokpi district headquarters to monitor the movement of potential troublemakers.
In Imphal, security forces have been particularly active around Khuman Lampak, where the Manipur People’s Convention is set to take place. Central forces have also been deployed in front of the historical Kangla Gate as part of these precautionary measures. “This enhanced security is designed to prevent any unwanted incidents by anti-social elements in the state, particularly this Saturday,” stated a police official.
The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity, representing the Meitei community, has urged the public to suspend daily activities on May 3 in favor of attending the convention. Volunteers are using public address systems to remind citizens of the violence that has plagued the region over the past two years and to raise awareness about the perceived threats to the state’s territorial and administrative integrity.
In a show of solidarity, the Kuki Students’ Organisation and the Zomi Students’ Federation have also called for a shutdown on the same day in Kuki-dominated areas. They are encouraging community participation in a commemoration event organized by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum at the Churachandpur district headquarters. In a joint statement, the student bodies noted, “May 3 marks two years since the outbreak of ethnic violence,” and urged everyone to observe the day in silence, with schools and businesses closing in remembrance. Additionally, they have called for residents to display black flags to signify mourning.
The violence, which has erupted between the Imphal Valley-based Meitei community and the hill-dwelling Kuki-Zo groups, has resulted in over 260 deaths and left thousands displaced since the unrest began in 2023. The ongoing tensions highlight the fragile state of peace in Manipur and the urgent need for dialogue and conflict resolution.
In related news, law enforcement has apprehended two active members of the banned United National Liberation Front (UNLF) during a police operation in the North AOC area of Imphal West district. The arrested individuals, identified as Huidrom Pishak and Hanglem Thoiba Meitei, were found in possession of a 9mm pistol loaded with two live rounds.
