Trump Boldly Renames Veterans Day: Celebrate ‘Victory Day’ with Pride and Honor

In a recent announcement, former President Donald Trump proposed renaming Veterans Day, observed on November 11, to “Victory Day for World War I,” while designating May 8, known internationally as V-E Day, as “Victory Day for World War II.” These changes aim to commemorate the United States’ achievements in these major conflicts. “We won both Wars; nobody was close to us in terms of strength, bravery, or military brilliance, but we never celebrate anything,” Trump expressed via a late-night post on Truth Social. He emphasized a renewed focus on celebrating American victories.

Despite the declaration, no executive order has been issued, and Trump did not clarify whether he envisioned May 8 as a new federal holiday like Veterans Day. The authority to create or amend public holidays lies with Congress, which would need to approve any such changes. Trump’s commentary highlighted the celebratory practices of America’s allies, who mark V-E Day, or “Victory in Europe,” on May 8, honoring their role in World War II’s conclusion following Germany’s surrender.

This year’s V-E Day holds particular significance as it marks 80 years since the formal end of World War II in Europe. The event is commemorated by U.S. allies such as Britain, France, and Canada. However, Trump’s assertion that the U.S. contributed more than any other nation to the defeat of Nazi Germany may be contested, particularly by Russia. Russia celebrates its Victory Day on May 9, honoring the Soviet Union’s critical role in the war and remembering the 27 million Soviet lives lost. It remains a pivotal national holiday in Russia, deeply ingrained in the country’s historical narrative.

The renaming proposition links back to the origins of Veterans Day, initially termed Armistice Day in the United States to mark the culmination of World War I. After World War II and the Korean War, the holiday was renamed to extend its homage to all U.S. military veterans. Meanwhile, Memorial Day serves a distinct purpose, observed on the last Monday in May, to honor those who have died in military service.

In his post, Trump did not articulate specific celebratory activities for the suggested “Victory Days.” However, his aspirations for grand military honors are known, referencing past expressions of interest in military parades and other patriotic events in Washington, D.C.

The potential renaming of these holidays invites further discussion on how the U.S. celebrates its historical military achievements and recognizes its veterans. As these conversations unfold, it is crucial to balance honoring past contributions with a nuanced understanding of global perspectives on these historical events.
