Urgent Call to Action: Sand Lorry Operators Unite for Direct River Sand Sale Protest on August 8
Lorry Owners Plan Protest Over Sand Shortage and Quarry Openings in Tamil Nadu
The Tamil Nadu Federation of Sand and Coarse Soil Lorry Owners’ Associations has announced plans for a protest on August 8 to demand direct sales of river sand and the opening of new quarries. In a press conference held on Monday, federation member S. Yuvaraj highlighted the growing need for coarse soil for construction, exacerbated by a shortage of river sand. According to the federation, 20,000 lorry loads of M-sand are currently being distributed across the State, but the sand scarcity has compromised quality.
The federation urged the government to open quarries, allowing residents to purchase sand at affordable prices. They also called for permission to import sand from neighbouring states, such as Andhra Pradesh, to alleviate the shortage. Additionally, the federation requested the removal of more than one toll plaza within a 60-km radius on national highways to facilitate smoother transportation.
The protest aims to draw attention to these pressing issues and seek immediate intervention from the State government. The federation’s demands underline the critical impact of sand shortages on construction quality and the urgent need for regulatory changes to mitigate this problem.
