Jaya Bachchan’s Fiery Stand Against Amitabh’s Mention Sparks Controversy Again
Jaya Bachchan Lashes Out in Parliament Over Being Addressed By Husband’s Name
New Delhi: Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Jaya Bachchan on Monday vocally objected in the Rajya Sabha when Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar addressed her using her full name, including her husband Amitabh Bachchan’s name. Labeling it a "new drama" initiated in Parliament, Jaya remarked on her discomfort about the practice of identifying women by their husband’s name, calling it outdated.
"Sir, I hope you know the meaning of Amitabh," she intriguingly stated, while expressing her pride in her husband’s achievements but emphasizing her own identity. "This is a new drama started by you all. This did not use to happen before," she asserted.
Responding to Jaya’s objection, Vice President Dhankhar clarified that the name used in the House is the same as that on the election certificate and that there’s a provision to change it if she wished. He added, "The entire country is proud of Amitabh Bachchan’s achievements."
In her quest for consistency, Jaya Bachchan questioned Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on why he didn’t add his wife’s name to his. Khattar, who is unmarried, cheekily responded, "As for my wife’s name in front of mine… not in this birth; for this, you will have to wait until the next birth."
This episode followed a previous objection from Jaya on July 29, when Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh addressed her as "Jaya Amitabh Bachchan" during House proceedings. Jaya had then also insisted that “only Jaya Bachchan would have sufficed."
Amidst the drama, Jaya raised a supplementary question about the severe waterlogging in Gurugram, labeled as a smart city, which obstructed her plans. Former Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar responded that Gurugram isn’t on the smart city list but emphasized its iconic status and infrastructure improvements during his tenure. He noted, "Heavy rainfall often causes this, but we will look into this issue," highlighting the presence of 300 Fortune 500 companies in Gurugram.
