V-P Jagdeep Dhankhar Urges Constitutional Integrity: Institutions Must Embrace Their Unique Roles
Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar emphasized the essential roles of constitutional institutions during the launch of Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel’s memoir, Chunautiyan Mujhe Pasand Hain, in Lucknow on Thursday. Dhankhar voiced concerns over derogatory remarks directed at positions of respect, such as that of the President and governors, underscoring the need for mutual respect among various branches of government.
Dhankhar called for “coordination, collaboration, and cooperation” among institutions, referencing a recent Supreme Court commentary on the Waqf law. He stressed that each branch of government must adhere to its jurisdiction to foster respect and effective governance. “In our Constitution, two positions are supreme: the President of India and the governor. Their oaths are distinct—they are tasked with protecting, preserving, and defending the Constitution,” he noted.
Highlighting the importance of constitutional fidelity, Dhankhar reminded public representatives that they are elected by the citizens of India. “Our duty is to respect one another and our institutions. The Constitution does not promote confrontation but encourages dialogue and collaboration,” he stated.
He pointed out that just as the legislature cannot issue judgments, the judiciary must refrain from creating laws. Dhankhar’s remarks indicate a broader call for each institution to respect its boundaries to maintain the integrity of governance and the constitutional framework.
As debates around institutional roles continue, Dhankhar’s insights serve to reinforce the need for harmony within India’s democratic structure, urging all branches of government to work in concert for the benefit of the nation.
In today’s political context, his statements resonate deeply, highlighting the delicate balance of power and the necessity for respect among institutions to uphold democracy effectively.
