Union Budget 2024-25 Ensures Representation for All Sectors: Sambit Patra
GANGTOK: On Saturday evening, BJP national spokesperson Dr. Sambit Patra engaged with Sikkim’s civil society to elaborate on how the Union Budget 2024-25 paves the way for ‘Vikshit Bharat 2047,’ particularly focusing on transforming India’s youth into a skilled and employable workforce. The session, organized by the BJP’s economic cell in Gangtok, was attended by representatives from various sectors including commerce, education, women’s self-help groups, media, and political entities.
Dr. Patra emphasized that the budget ensures rightful representation for every societal segment. Highlighting the budget’s focus on education and skill development, he outlined significant initiatives introduced by the Narendra Modi-led NDA government. These include five schemes aimed at providing employment and skill opportunities to 4.1 crore youth over five years, with a central outlay of Rs. 2 lakh crore. Key initiatives feature an internship program for 1 crore youth in 500 top companies, offering a monthly stipend of Rs. 5000, and establishing 1,000 Industrial Training Institutes nationwide.
The budget also prioritizes capital expenditure for infrastructure projects, including colleges, roads, and bridges. Over Rs. 3 lakh crore has been allocated for schemes aimed at women and girls to foster women-led development. The PM Gram Sadak Yojana phase-IV will ensure all-weather roads to 25,000 left-out villages.
Additionally, Rs. 2.66 lakh crore is allocated for rural development and infrastructure, with Rs. 1.52 lakh crore earmarked for agriculture and allied sectors. Dr. Patra also announced the release of 109 high-yielding, climate-resilient crop varieties. He noted that 1 crore farmers will transition to natural farming over the next two years, with Sikkim recognized globally for its natural farming practices.
On fiscal discipline, Dr. Patra highlighted that despite substantial allocations, the budget remains within fiscal constraints. Sikkim’s share in Union tax devolution is Rs. 4839.17 crore for 2024-25, a 508% increase from previous periods. Central grants-in-aid to Sikkim saw a 50% increment under the NDA regime, reaching Rs. 17,718 crore. Moreover, Sikkim receives Rs. 2062 crore for capital expenditure from 2020-21 to 2024-25.
The session concluded with Dr. Patra addressing audience queries on the budget’s implications for Sikkim. State BJP president DR Thapa opened the session with a welcome address.
